For five hundred years, the Philipponnat family has made its mark on the Champagne terroir. Generations of men and women have cultivated the land in Aÿ, the family’s home since the time of Apvril, who acquired vineyards in Le Léon. The maison, which dates back to 1910, is renowned for the walled vineyard surrounding it, a 5.5-hectare plot known as Clos des Goisses. This unique terroir gives rise to their most famous and coveted bottle, known among connoisseurs as their “superstar cuvée.”
The house philosophy is rooted in Burgundian traditions, emphasizing artisanal winemaking and a deep connection to the Mareuil terroir, derived from old vines with low yields. Masters of the art of blending, they use oak judiciously to avoid overpowering their wines, while partial fermentations, without malolactic fermentation, help achieve a characteristic freshness. Nevertheless, there is no fixed recipe, as each champagne is crafted according to the specific demands of each harvest.
